EPRI-ESDC Tax Linkage Project Interactive Results

This project uses administrative data on students provided by 14 PSE institutions from four Canadian provinces linked to tax records held at Statistics Canada to track the labour market outcomes of Canadian college (diploma) and university (bachelor’s) graduates from 2005 through 2013. The project was funded by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and undertaken in partnership with Statistics Canada. Explore the results with the interactive graphs listed in the following index. For details about the data, follow this link ≫.

Barista or Better? New Evidence on the Earnings of Post-Secondary Education Graduates: A Tax Linkage Approach
by Ross Finnie, Kaveh Afshar, Eda Bozkurt, Masashi Miyairi, and Deja Pavlic, 2016

About the Data

Sample Selection

The sample consists of PSE graduates who obtained either a College diploma or a Bachelor's degree and excludes individuals that graduated with advanced degrees. Bachelor's degrees which cannot be entered directly from high school (e.g. education or law) are excluded. Earnings records less than $1,000 are treated as non-employment and excluded. We exclude individuals that did not file taxes in a given year, but allow them to return into the sample for all years for which tax information is available. We consider individuals to have returned to school if they claim more than $100 in tuition expenses in a given tax year. At that point, we censor the earnings records.

Earnings Measure

The measure of earnings is total before-tax earnings, calculated as the sum of the earnings from T4 slips, any declared positive self-employment income, and other employment income. All earnings are Consumer Price Index (CPI) adjusted to 2014 dollars. To protect individual privacy, the results are rounded to the nearest $100.

Field of Study Classficiation

Each graduate observation is classified into one of fields of study based on the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code. Click the accompanying plus icon to see the CIP codes under a given field of study.
